Tips For Picky Eaters
Tips For Picky Eaters
Midwest Family Wellness provides some tips for picky eaters:
- Focus on overall diet rather than specific foods. Kids should be eating more whole, minimally processed food-food that is as close to its natural form as possible-and less packaged and processed food.
- Be a role model. The childhood impulse to imitate is strong so don't ask your child to eat vegetables while you gorge on potato chips. Make sure they catch you doing the right thing!
- Cook more meals at home. Cooking at home has a tremendous effect on your families health. If you make large batches, cooking just a few times can be enough to feed your family for the whole week. Involving them in the meal prep can be fun (probably).
- Get kids involved. When shopping for groceries or preparing meals, have your children help you with these tasks. You can teach them about different foods and how to read food labels. This also works if you have to eat out, teach them what the different calorie numbers mean!
- Make healthy snacks available. Keep plenty of fruit, vegetables, and healthy beverages (water) on hand so kids avoid unhealthy snacks like soda, chips, and cookies. Watch out for snacks that might wreck your mealtime (high calorie, low nutrition).
- Celebrate their choices! It is a long, long game and we as parents are teaching them the rules. Celebrate when they make a solid choice. They will remember it.
