IASTM
IASTM stands for instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation, also referred to as scraping. It is the use of small instruments to break down myofascial adhesions or restrictions and scar tissue. These instruments allow a deeper and more specific therapy for the targeted tissue. The idea behind IASTM is to use these tools to create microtrauma where adhesions and scar tissue have built up. The microtrauma allows the body to create an inflammatory response and repair the damaged tissue by developing new, healthy tissue. The healthy tissue can then lay down in an organized pattern instead of the previous haphazard fashion. IASTM is most commonly used for tendonitis, myofascial restrictions, trigger points, and muscle strains. IASTM should not be used when there is an open wound, an unhealed fracture, or uncontrolled hypertension. Depending on the patient’s pain tolerance, IASTM can sometimes be uncomfortable during scraping.
Here at Midwest Family Wellness, I am the residential scraper. Many of our patients who come into the office receive their spinal adjustment, and then we head to the therapy area where we start the IASTM process. It only takes about 3 minutes per area and it really helps people feel better and heal faster. See me for all your scraping needs!
